Description
The subject of this beautiful sculpture has its basis in Greek mythology. Cupid's mother, Venus, was jealous of the beauty of Psyche. Venus sent Cupid to earth to pierce Psyche's heart with an arrow. This would compel Psyche to fall hopelessly in love with a monstrous creature, thus removing her permanently from the sight of men. But Cupid, upon first sighting the radiant Psyche, was so befogged by her beauty that he accidentally pierced himself with his own arrow of love.

William Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905) created a painting of this Greek legend that inspired sculptor Henri Godet (French, 1863-1937) to bring it to life. Godet's sculpture of Cupid and Psyche was first exhibited at the Paris Salon des Beaux Arts in 1896. Godet depicts Cupid's arms protectively enfolding Psyche as they thrust forward to fly to his secret castle. Please click on the thumbnail images above to see additional views..
